Sailing into Forever: A Dreamy Engagement Session on the Water
There’s something undeniably romantic about being on the water—the gentle sway of the boat, the salty breeze, and the wide-open horizon stretching out in every direction. When Kat and Doug chose to celebrate their engagement with a sailboat session, I knew it was going to be something special.
The Experience
We met up in New Smyrna Beach, where Kat and Doug hopped into my car so we could carpool to the pick-up destination. From there, we took a walk down a stunning, hidden trail that opened up to a breathtaking view of light, water, and sand. Waiting for us was a small dinghy, ready to take us out to our home for the evening—a vintage 58’ antique sailboat named Explorer II anchored along the Indian River North.
The January sky was a bit overcast, casting a moody, beautiful glow over the evening. But even with the cloud cover, it was one of the most gorgeous days we could have hoped for—calm waters, a soft breeze, and just the right touch of magic.
More Than Just a Photoshoot
From the moment we stepped aboard, I wanted to make sure this felt less like a structured session and more like an experience—one they’d truly enjoy. We started with a few candid shots to help them settle in, and before long, the session transformed into what Kat later described as feeling “more like a date than a photoshoot.”
Doug steered at the helm while Kat leaned into him, sharing quiet laughs. They danced barefoot on the deck, popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate, and let themselves fully enjoy the moment. It was lighthearted, intimate, and so much fun to capture. At one point, I even hopped back into the dinghy to get shots of them from the water—some of my favorite frames from the session.
